Easy Crochet Scrunchie Pattern for Beginners

A crochet scrunchie is a quick project that turns a plain hair elastic into a soft handmade accessory. This pattern is worked directly around the elastic, so there is no separate strip to sew. The stitch count is flexible: what matters is covering the elastic completely and adding enough stitches for a full ruffle.

Pattern terms: US crochet terminology. Skill level: confident beginner. Finished size varies with the elastic, yarn, and number of stitches.

Materials

  • Medium (worsted-weight) cotton or cotton-blend yarn; about 20–30 yards
  • A 4 mm or 4.5 mm crochet hook, or the size that gives a neat fabric
  • One strong, seamless hair elastic
  • Yarn needle and scissors

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Before you begin

Do not crochet into or pierce the elastic. Hold the yarn behind it, insert the hook through the center of the elastic, pull up a loop, and complete each stitch around the band. Slide the stitches together as you work. The exact number is not important, but the elastic should no longer show when it is relaxed.

Crochet scrunchie instructions

  1. Join the yarn: Make a slip knot on the hook. Insert the hook through the center of the elastic, yarn over, and pull the yarn back through. Chain 1 to secure it; this chain does not count as a stitch.
  2. Round 1: Work single crochet stitches around the elastic until it is densely covered. For an average elastic, 45–60 sc is a useful range. Push the stitches together instead of stretching the elastic to fit more. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
  3. Round 2: Chain 3; this counts as the first dc. Work 1 more dc in the same stitch, then work 2 dc in every remaining stitch around. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3.
  4. Finish: Cut the yarn, pull it through the final loop, and weave both ends securely through the crochet fabric. Avoid sewing through the rubber inside the elastic.

How to adjust the fullness

For a softer, less dramatic ruffle, work only 1 dc in every third stitch and 2 dc in the other stitches. For extra fullness, use 3 dc in every second or third stitch. Stop and spread the fabric around the band before fastening off; the ruffle should look even when the elastic is relaxed.

Common problems and fixes

  • The elastic still shows: add more sc to Round 1 and slide them closer together.
  • The edge curls into a tight ring: the second round needs more increases; add an extra dc at regular intervals.
  • The scrunchie feels stiff: try a slightly larger hook or a softer yarn.
  • The yarn slips around the elastic: tighten the joining chain and weave the starting tail through several nearby stitches.

Care and useful variations

Cotton blends are comfortable and usually easy to wash, but always follow the yarn label. Make a coordinated set with different colors, or use leftover yarn from the simple crochet headband. If you need help matching hook and yarn, see the crochet hook size guide.
