This beginner headband is made as a simple rectangle and then joined at the ends. It is a practical project for practicing straight rows, measuring your work and creating a neat seam.
Materials
- Medium-weight yarn that feels comfortable against the skin
- A hook suitable for the yarn, often around 5 mm
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Measuring tape
This pattern uses US single crochet terminology.
Choose the width
For a medium-width headband, make a foundation chain that measures around 8 to 10 cm when relaxed. The exact number of chains depends on your yarn and hook. Add or remove chains until the width feels right to you.
Crochet the rectangle
Single crochet into the second chain from the hook and into every remaining chain. Chain 1 and turn.
For every following row, single crochet into each stitch across, chain 1 and turn. Keep the same number of stitches in every row so the rectangle stays even.
Measure the length
Continue until the strip comfortably wraps around the intended head with a small amount of stretch. Crochet fabric often stretches during wear, so the finished strip is usually slightly shorter than the exact head circumference. Fit matters more than a fixed row count.
Join the ends
Bring the short ends together without twisting the band. You can sew them with a yarn needle or slip stitch through both layers. Make the seam secure but avoid pulling it so tightly that the join becomes stiff.
Finish neatly
Fasten off and weave the yarn tails back and forth through several stitches on the inside. Trim only after the tails feel secure.
Optional variations
- Alternate two colors every few rows.
- Work through the back loop only for a ridged texture.
- Make the strip narrower for a lighter hair band.
- Add a small gathered section at the seam by wrapping yarn around the center a few times.
Fit and safety note
The headband should feel comfortable, not tight. Adjust the length for the person who will wear it. For young children, avoid loose decorations or small attached parts that could become a hazard.
Once you have made one headband, try the same construction with half double crochet or another simple stitch to compare the texture and stretch. The Half Double Crochet Stitch guide is a natural next step.
