This simple coaster is a useful first project because it is small, quick and easy to measure. It uses basic stitches and gives you a chance to practice straight edges and consistent tension.
Materials
- Small amount of medium-weight cotton yarn
- 5 mm crochet hook, or a size that gives you a comfortable fabric
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Cotton is a practical choice for coasters because it handles moisture well. Always check the care instructions for your specific yarn.
Finished size
The sample is designed to be roughly 10 cm square, but exact size will depend on your yarn, hook and tension.
Pattern
Foundation: Chain 16.
Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. You should have 15 stitches.
Rows 2–15: Chain 1 and turn. Single crochet in each stitch across. Keep 15 stitches in every row.
If your coaster reaches the width you want before row 15, stop when the height matches the width. The goal is a square rather than an exact row number.
Optional simple border
For a neat edge, work one round of single crochet around the entire square. Place extra stitches in each corner so the border can turn without pulling. If the border begins to ripple, you may be adding too many stitches. If the coaster cups inward, you may need more stitches around the corners.
Finishing
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail long enough to weave in. Pull the tail through the final loop and tighten gently. Use a yarn needle to weave the ends through several stitches on the wrong side.
If the coaster does not lie flat, lightly block it according to the yarn care instructions. Shape it into a square and allow it to dry completely before use.
Ways to customize it
- Use two colors and change color every few rows.
- Make a matching set of four or six.
- Try half double crochet for a slightly different texture.
- Add a contrasting border after the square is complete.
