This small five-petal flower is a useful scrap-yarn project and a cheerful way to identify a set of keys or decorate a zip pull. The flower is worked in only two rounds. A short crocheted loop connects it to a metal split ring, so no glue is required.
Pattern terms: US crochet terminology. Skill level: beginner. The finished flower is approximately 5–7 cm across, depending on yarn and hook size.

Flower instructions
- Round 1: Make a magic ring. Chain 1; it does not count as a stitch. Work 10 sc into the ring. Pull the ring closed and join with a sl st to the first sc. If changing color, fasten off and join the petal color in any stitch.
- Round 2, first petal: Sl st in the next stitch. In that same stitch work ch 2, 2 dc, and ch 2. Sl st in the following stitch.
- Remaining petals: Repeat the previous step four more times, using two stitches for each petal. At the end you will have five petals placed around all 10 stitches.
- Finish the flower: Join neatly to the first sl st, cut the yarn, and weave the ends through several stitches on the back.
Make the key-ring loop
- Join yarn through a secure stitch on the back of the flower, close to the center.
- Chain 16–20, depending on the loop length you want.
- Thread the chain through the split ring. Bring the end back to the flower and slip stitch into the same strong area where the chain began.
- Fasten off. With the yarn needle, sew through the chain base several times and weave in the tail. Tug the ring firmly to test the join before use.
Why the stitch count works
Round 1 has 10 stitches. Each petal uses exactly two: the first stitch holds the tall stitches and the second anchors the petal with a slip stitch. Five repeats therefore use all 10 stitches. If you end with four or six petals, recount Round 1 and check that each repeat advances across two stitches.
Color and size variations
- Use one color for the center and another for the petals, joining the second color after Round 1.
- For a smaller flower, use sport-weight yarn and a smaller hook.
- For a fuller petal, replace the 2 dc with 3 dc, but keep each petal inside the same stitch.
- Sew the flower to a bag instead of adding the ring, keeping the back flat.
Safety and durability
A keychain is pulled and rubbed frequently, so cotton yarn and tightly woven ends work well. Do not rely on a single slip stitch to hold the metal ring. This item contains a small metal part and is not a toy; keep it away from babies and young children.
