These rustic crochet acorn ornaments are quick fall decorations made from small amounts of worsted-weight yarn. A smooth single-crochet body is topped with a contrasting textured cap and a sturdy hanging loop. Use them individually on branches and gift packages, or join several to a simple autumn garland.
Skill level: advanced beginner. Finished size: approximately 3 inches tall excluding the loop. Construction: body and cap worked separately in continuous rounds, then sewn together. US terms are used.
Materials
For each acorn, use about 15 yards of worsted-weight yarn for the body and 8 yards of dark brown yarn for the cap. Rust, ochre, sage, cream, and warm tan create a natural palette. You will also need a US G-6 (4 mm) hook, a locking marker, yarn needle, scissors, and a small amount of washable toy stuffing. Use a smaller hook than the yarn label suggests so the fabric stays dense.
Abbreviations
sc single crochet; inc 2 single crochet in one stitch; dec invisible single crochet decrease; BLO back loop only; ch chain; sl st slip stitch. Unless stated otherwise, work continuously and mark the first stitch.
Crochet the Acorn Body
Round 1: With the body colour, work 6 single crochet in a magic ring. Round 2: Increase in each stitch for 12. Round 3: Single crochet 1, increase; repeat around for 18. Rounds 4–7: Single crochet in every stitch for 18.
Round 8: Single crochet 1, invisible decrease; repeat around for 12. Add a small amount of stuffing, keeping the body firm but not stretched. Round 9: Decrease around for 6. Fasten off with a long tail, thread it through the front loops of the remaining stitches, pull closed, and secure.
Crochet the Brown Cap
Round 1: With brown, work 6 single crochet in a magic ring. Round 2: Increase in every stitch for 12. Round 3: Single crochet 1, increase; repeat for 18. Round 4: Work 18 single crochet in the back loops only. Round 5: Work 18 single crochet in both loops. Slip stitch to the next stitch and leave a long sewing tail.
For a more textured cap, work Round 5 with slightly loose slip stitches instead of single crochet. Check that the cap fits over the closed top of the body before fastening off.
Add the Hanging Loop
Join brown yarn at the centre top of the cap. Chain 14–18, depending on the loop size needed, then slip stitch into the same point. Fasten off and pull both ends to the inside. Knot them securely beneath the cap so the loop can hold the ornament.
Assembly
Place the cap over the closed end of the body. With the long brown tail, sew through the final cap round and the body stitches directly underneath. Work around twice if the acorn will hang from a bag or gift. Hide the tail inside the body and shape the lower end gently into a soft point.
Colour and Garland Ideas
Make three or five acorns in related fall colours for a balanced set. To create a garland, crochet a long brown chain and attach an acorn every 5–7 inches with a slip stitch or separate short loop. Mix the acorns with simple leaves only if each decoration is sewn securely and the finished garland will be kept away from small children and pets.
Common Problems
Stuffing shows: use a smaller hook or less filling. The cap is too loose: skip Round 5 or use a smaller hook for the cap. The body looks round instead of acorn-shaped: keep the middle rounds even and shape the closed bottom into a gentle point. The ornament hangs sideways: place the loop exactly at the cap centre before sewing the cap on.
